- Atos Medical and the Provox System

Already in 1873, doctor Billroth performed total laryngectomy for cancer, but it was not until 1972 the first early type of tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis was described. The success rate was limited and since the prosthesis had to be changed rather frequent and the procedure was done retrograde, physicians and speech therapists worldwide continued to investigate how to develop the technique and the prosthesis. The origin of today’s modern surgical techniques was described 1980 and by then, due to the operation methods and current knowledge, the prosthesis was non-indwelling. Today total laryngectomy is not only about removing cancer, it also about - already at the time of surgery - facilitating optimal vocal rehabilitation, by inserting indwelling Silicone voice prosthesis.

Atos Medical AB, a Swedish medical device company specialized in high quality medical grade Silicone devices.

Atos Medical AB, a Swedish medical device company specialized in high quality medical grade Silicone devices, launched the indwelling Provox voice prosthesis 1990. Together with the surgical technique involving primary insertion, the Provox system has become the golden standard in many countries worldwide. The success of the Provox system grew even bigger when Provox2 was launched in 1998. Now there was an indwelling prosthesis that could be replaced anterograde, with an easy to use atraumatic insertion device. The latest invention, the Provox ActiValve, is a problem-solving voice prosthesis.
